Methods Subjects Twenty-nine healthy young (21.75 ± 1.25 yr) men (mean ± SD, 18.1 ± 1.4 yr) volunteered for the study. All had normal values for protein intake, muscle mass, and BMI. Subjects were included in the study if they had previously completed a 3-h energy intake restriction (<500 kJ/d), a 2-d resistance exercise (RE) program including resistance training (4 sets each of two repetitions of 10RM, 30 min rest in between sets), and a 2-wk fast (∼14 d), anabolic response. None of subjects had a history of injury or disease, and all were nonsmokers, anabolic response. Subjects with a history of medical history (including thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, or chronic respiratory disease, but no heart disease or stroke) were excluded from the study. The study protocol was approved by the Human Studies Council, Institutional Review Board, and Institutional Review Committee of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Informed written consent was obtained from all volunteers before the experimental protocol.
